Grading
Grade Allocation¶
Your final course grade is determined by four components:
- Participation: 20%
- Final Exam: 30%
- Individual Assignments: 30%
- Group Project: 20%
Participation (20%)¶
Participation is based on attendance: 1 point for each lecture and 2 points for each studio. The combined lecture and mini-studio session (September 9) and the two presentation sessions (October 5 and October 7) each count as a studio, so the course has 21 participation points in total.
See the Course Modality policy for how attendance works in each section, and the absence policy for excused absences.
Final Exam (30%)¶
The final exam is completed in person and on paper on Saturday, October 10, after the last class session.
Individual Assignments (30%)¶
There are three individual assignments, and each counts for 10% of the final grade.
You may resubmit any one individual assignment before the last day of classes (Wednesday, October 7), and the grade on the resubmission replaces the original. This does not apply to the group project.
Grading emphasizes your design reasoning and reflection over the implementation. You are encouraged to use AI to implement your designs, but you must share your AI chat or agent logs as part of each submission (see the AI policy).
Group Project (20%)¶
The group project is completed in teams of 3 to 4 and split into two submissions:
- G1 (due Sunday, September 27): the team's RFC. G1 counts for 40% of the project grade.
- G2 (due Sunday, October 4): execution and presentation slides. G2 counts for 60% of the project grade.
Late days cannot be used for the group project, and a late G1 or G2 scores zero (see the late work policy). Attendance at the presentation sessions (Monday, October 5 and Wednesday, October 7) is credited through participation, not the project grade.
Letter Grades¶
Final letter grades start from the standard scale (e.g., an A at 93%, an A- at 90%, a B+ at 87%). These boundaries are guaranteed minimums. We may curve a boundary down, but we will never raise one. In other words, it may get easier to earn a given grade, but not harder. If you have any questions about the grading policy, come talk to us.
